I am known to be a very harsh critic when it comes to TV shows and movies. Call me judgemental, but I vigorously enjoy finding the faults in any given piece of cinematic entertainment and spreading my opinions to the world. It has become close to impossible to find a masterpiece in any streaming platform right now, yet, even I do have to admit: the show this article will talk about is, perhaps, one of the best productions our generation will see.
The critically-acclaimed show "The Last of Us" launched on January 15th in HBO Max, quickly became a major success, beloved by not only the video game fanatics, but also the unsuspecting masses who just wanted entertainment on a Sunday night. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, after the population has been consumed by a fungal infection, the show tells the tale of Ellie (an orphan immune to the disease) and Joel (a father who lost his daughter) and how they overcome the complex challenges of being alive in a world where all is lost.
The show is directed by video game creator Neil Druckmann and the wonderful Craig Mazin, both who do a more-than-fantastic job in making this world come alive. However, it is the cast, courtesy of casting director Victoria Thomas, that makes the show such a spectacular viewing experience. Pedro Pascal is known for his roles as Javier Peña, in Narcos and The Mandalorian, in Star Wars, however, his performance as Joel is one of the most admirable, heartfelt acting on TV. It is, however, Bella Ramsey's protagonist-debut performance as Ellie, that takes the show to a whole new level.
The rest of the cast, composed of powerful names such as Nick Offerman (Bill), Murray Bartlett (Frank), Storm Reid (Riley) and Anna Torv (Tess), also does a phenomenal job in bringing their respective characters to life. The show is a triumph of modern television, and depicts, probably, the most heartbreaking, truthful, amazing love story seen in recent years.
