A New Era for Britain’s Monarchy

On the 8th of September, Queen Elizabeth II unfortunately passed away at the age of 96 after 70 years of service as the United Kingdom’s Queen. The Queen’s body went through a very long process so that all of the people of Britain could pay their respects, followed by a ceremony which announced King Charles III as the new king by saying, “God save the King”.

Ever since the passing of the Queen on September 8th, the city has stopped, schools have closed, and businesses have taken a pause as the Queen’s body undergoes a 560-mile journey throughout the UK. This journey started off with her casket being in Balmoral castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This was then followed by a 400-mile trip until Northolt Airport, from where her body was taken by car to Buckingham Palace. What remained of the trip to St. George’s Chapel was done either by car or by foot so that the population could pay their respects, throw flowers, and honor the late Queen and future King. When the Queen's body finally reached St. George’s Chapel, its final destination, there were 2 minutes of silence throughout all of the United Kingdom - even flights were stopped from taking off or flying overhead at that moment. After the 2 minutes, and for the first time in 70 years, the population heard “God save the King” and not “God save the Queen”. Leaders such as but not limited to President Joe Biden from the United States, President Jair Bolsonaro from Brazil, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from Canada, showed up and sat through the event. The whole 560-mile journey started on September 11th and ended on September 19th.

With the Queen’s passing also comes a lot of problems for Great Britain, one of them being a slower economy. During the journey of the Queen’s body there were no major conflicts against King Charles III being appointed king. However, now that the Queen’s burial has passed, the King has started to receive some backlash based on what he has done in the past with his infidelity to Princess Diana but over the years he has begun to get the approval of the British population.

As of now the Queen’s body is buried in St. George’s Chapel and King Charles III’s coronation should be held in 2023. King Charles III also said he would take a week to grieve the death of his mother in private before returning to his royal duties. This has been an unfortunate moment for Britain but not unexpected given the Queen’s age and, according to the Royal Palace, she was able to go at peace. The Queen lived a long and fulfilling life of duty serving her country and she will undoubtedly be remembered for generations to come.
