Despite having been made over 25 years ago, Clueless remains one of the most prominent teen rom-coms of this generation. The movie is an adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma and was directed by Amy Heckerling. Clueless revolves around the main character, Cher Horowitz, a 16-year-old teenage spoiled girl who is ‘clueless’ about who she truly is. Cher appears to be materialistic, out of touch with reality, and is more interested in other people's relationships than her own. As the film progresses, Cher becomes more mature and starts seeing the world as it truly is.
Cher Horowitz and her best friend, Dionne, are known as two of the most popular sophomores in their high school. They act as matchmakers for two professors - intending to get better grades - as well as taking Tai, a lost transfer student, under their wings to help her ‘fit in’. Multiple mishaps occur and Cher couldn't possibly keep everything under her control, so she has to learn how to deal with failure and rise back up again. As events progress, Cher finally realizes how oblivious to reality she has been and even crosses paths with the man of her dreams.
Personally, I loved Cher's portrayal of a 'ditzy teen airhead' character because it paved the way for films like "Legally Blonde" or "Easy A," in which stunning, self-aware women reclaim their bodies and their quo as beautiful women who can also be humorous. "Clueless" debunks the dumb blonde cliché that has been incorrectly connected with Marilyn Monroe's star icon.
Overall, I rate the movie an 8.5 out of 10 because I truly enjoy rom-coms. This movie differs from other teen movies which solely revolve around love interests, as Clueless is able to portray and empower female friendships alongside all the romantic aspects of the narrative as well.
