Celebrating Brazil

On February 17th, EARJ celebrated one of Brazil's biggest events: Carnival! On the Gávea campus, the Portuguese Honor Society (PHS) and the PTA organized the Bloco da Pantera, where all students and faculty joined with the most diverse costumes. To cheer up the two school campuses even more, the project "Viagem Rítmica", organized by the artists Dudu Fuentes, Luiz Paulo, and Marcos Rios, invited professional American and Brazilian musicians to the revelry to play alongside EARJ’s music band. Thus, through the drumming of Brazilian popular songs, such as "Mamãe Eu Quero" and "Cidade Maravilhosa", the sunny afternoon became even brighter with the many smiles and singing amidst confetti and streamers.

Moreover, at the Gávea campus, the Bloco da Pantera also held the LGBTQIAP+ parade, since Rio’s LGBTQIAP+ marches of this year will occur only in May and June, a crucial period for our seniors who will be taking their IB exams. Therefore, in order to make this moment of representation and awareness accessible to everyone, the idea of holding the parade at the Bloco da Pantera came up. The successful parade is a result of a partnership between PHS and the Queer and Alliances Club.

It is of great delight that everyone involved in our carnival had the opportunity to experience the joy that moves Brazilian people every year. It is of no doubt that the event was a great success, and we sincerely hope that this revelry can soon become a tradition at both EARJ campuses!
