In this month’s interview, we have invited Ms. Silvia, the Spanish teacher who wholeheartedly trusts that being able to exchange knowledge is a source of pride. She has been working at EARJ since 2018, and in this interview, we will share a little more about her story.
PP: What is your favorite thing about our school?
SV: The school gives us the opportunity to be in contact with a large number of students of different nationalities. In all this time I have been able to show them a bit of my culture, as well as to respect others and have great affection for my students.
PP: If you could change something about EARJ, what would it be?
SV: I would like to have a room just for Spanish classes to decorate it nicely, because we have a lot of cultural diversity. For those who don't know, there are 21 countries that speak Spanish as their official language.
PP: Where else have you lived in the world, and where else have you worked? What place did you enjoy the most?
SV: I was born, raised and I studied in Mexico. I worked there until I was 25, then I came to Brazil and have lived here ever since. I have worked in several private schools in Rio de Janeiro, as well as in language courses. I love this country, it is very beautiful, its people, music, nature, and gastronomy have conquered my heart.
PP: How has your experience been in rio?
SV: At first it was difficult because I didn't know Portuguese, but the people always treated me very well.
PP: What does being a teacher at EARJ mean to you?
SV: It is a pleasure to work in an international school and to have contact with so many cultures and to be able to get to know them, as well as to share my Mexican culture with the entire school community on important dates such as the Day of the Dead.
PP: What was your favorite subject in school?
SV: Spanish, of course. I love Latin American literature, I like to immerse myself in the stories that writers tell. My favorite writer is Isabel Allende. When I was a child I used to write in a diary everything that happened at school. At that time I was in elementary school and then when I entered high school, I stopped doing it because it seemed corny.
PP: What do you like the most about teaching?
SV: Being able to see the success of my students in reaching their goals and knowing that in some way, I was part of that conquest.
PP: If you had the opportunity to change something in the whole world what would you change/fix?
SV: If I had the opportunity to change something, it would be the abuse of power by some people because they harm the lives of innocents with their decisions.
PP: What is something that not many people know about you?
SV: Mr. Rafael, the French teacher, is my adopted son. Mr. Rafael and I had very difficult losses, Rafael lost his mother and I lost my son. When Rafael's mother passed away from Covid, I adopted him as my son and he adopted me as his mother. We have a very nice relationship and we help each other.
