How to save an unconscious person in 5 steps

Have you ever seen someone chocking? Or have you witnessed a serious accident? How would you react if a friend faints in the middle of the class? There are simple steps you can follow to save a life, and you don’t have to be a doctor or a nurse to do so, but you do need to pay close attention to the instructions below:


1. Check if the person is unconscious

Speak out loud to the victim and check for reactions


2. Call emergency

911 in USA. In Brazil, call 193 for the firefighter department, and 192 for SAMU, Serviço de Atendimento Móvel de Urgencia, which is the emergency service provided by the government in Rio.


3. Check for breathing

Put any glass (phones, glasses, watch, etc) near the person’s nose and check for any sign of mist, humidity from the breath warmth.


4. Check for pulse

Put two fingers under the victim’s throat or the wrist, and try to see if you feel any pulse. That shows the heart is still beating.


5. Chest compressions

Male sure the person is lied down on a flat hard place. Find the correct spot between the victim’s ribs, according to the image below, and start compressing 100-120 times per minute, to keep the heart beating until the ambulance arrives.


From then on, it will be up to the professionals.
