Investigating Human Relationships

In school curriculums, it is easy to find a subject called Sociology. However, many students are not aware that its study can extend beyond high school classrooms and become the basis of an essential profession dedicated to the analysis of human relations in societies. A sociologist, or social scientist, is one who, via scientific methods, studies social, political, economic, and cultural organizations, in order to understand phenomena and transformations that constantly occur on a global scale.


Graduates in Sociology have an analytical, curious, and inquisitive profile, and have an intrinsic interest in reading and writing. For those interested in this profession, the first step is to major in Social Sciences or Sociology, lasting for approximately 4 years. Although both investigate human social relationships, the first is a broader field of study that encompasses the second.


After graduating, the student can follow many different paths, but the two main ones that people tend to incline to are the educational industry and research field. If desiring to join the first industry, that is, to become a Sociology teacher, a master’s degrees is recommended if intending to become an university professor. While the path of research, a chosen future for many sociologists, can be carried out in the academic field, or for private and public companies. Furthermore, sociologists are also qualified to develop public policies, advise political parties, and coordinate social projects in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations, public bodies, and companies.


The average salary of a sociologist in the United States, according to a survey carried out in 2021 by the employment website ZipRecruiter, ranges around ​$51,826 per year. However, it is important to consider that prices vary according to the area of ​​activity, location, level of experience, and among other factors.


In spite of the information presented, the importance of sociologists in the development of a more harmonious society is undeniable. Within this science, a pluralized environment is needed for debates aimed at equality!
