Lagerfeld: An Icon in Fashion

This year’s Met Gala theme was “In Honor of Karl,” inspired by fashion-industry icon: Karl Lagerfeld. He was a prominent designer for many well-known brands. Born in Germany in 1933, Lagerfeld began his fashion career at the age of seventeen, when he moved to Paris to work as an assistant for Pierre Balmain.

Throughout his career, Lagerfeld worked for some of the most notable names in fashion, including Chanel, Fendi, and Chloé. He was known for his innovative designs combining classic elegance and modern flair. One of Lagerfeld’s most significant achievements was his role as creative director at Chanel, where he transformed the brand into a global powerhouse, infusing current, modern ideas within its traditional designs. His ability to combine tradition and innovation distinguishes him from other designers.

Lagerfeld was also a prolific artist and photographer, creating a stunning portfolio that was exhibited worldwide. In addition to his work in fashion and photography, Lagerfeld was also a cultural icon known for his distinctive look – white hair, black sunglasses, high-collared shirts, a look we have all seen.

In 1984, Karl Lagerfeld founded his fashion brand “Karl Lagerfeld”, a place in which his particular personal style was mirrored in the brands’ designs. The business began with clothing for women but eventually branched into various categories ranging from accessories, menswear, and perfumes. In modern days, the Karl Lagerfeld brand is owned by the financial firm Apax Partners, and remains a significant player in the fashion business.

Lagerfeld was admired throughout his career for his innovative designs and ability to rework old fashion standards in novel and intriguing ways. Despite his success, Lagerfeld remained humble and dedicated to his craft until he died in 2019 at the age of eighty five. His legacy lives on through the countless designers he inspired and the timeless pieces he created that continue to influence the fashion of modern-day times.
