Notre Dame Catastrophe

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

On April 15th, the 850 year-old Notre Dame Catedral, one of the most important points in Paris, was severely damaged by a strong fire. It is really sad and devastating news, since the cathedral is known all around the world and survived 2 world wars, only to be basically destroyed by a fire. The fire lasted 15 hours until the firefighters controlled it. No one knows what caused the fire, but it might be related to the reform that was being done at the time.

Officers say that an equipment was, accidentally, set on fire. The fire started on the roof of the cathedral, destroying the stained-glass windows and the wooden interior at first. Later on, the fire spread and the famous spire that stayed on top of the catedral caught on fire, and later fell from the top of the roof and was destroyed.

There were four very important Catholic relics inside the Catedral: Jesus Christ's Crown of Thorns, The True Cross and Holy Nails, and The Tunic of Saint Louis. All these relics were saved by a priest named Jean-Marc Fournier.

Notre Dame is also the setting of a famous tale written by Victor Hugo, in 1831, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, says they will rebuild the church. "This is a sad and symbolic loss for France and the world, also a reminder that History returns all stone to dust", said Mr Greg Sitch, US Social Studies teacher.
