On Saturday, the 29th of April, the Panther Press Club, in partnership with the Literacy Project held an editorial writing workshop in Cidade das Artes. Students from the Rocinha community School learned about the structure, language and purpose of editorials and wrote an article about their lives and experiences. Together, they wrote about the importance of acquiring knowledge and the challenges they have encountered on their educational journeys. Mostly, all of their articles focused on the impact access to a well-rounded education has on their lives and the lives of other young people around them, praising Rocinha Community School for its initiative.
Another theme was positive influences and role-models. Maria, the youngest student participating, told the story of a friend who was stabbed by a boy for rejecting him. Her conclusion was that this boy’s aggression and hatred was caused by lack of positive influences in his life. Thankfully, the students from Rocinha Community School are provided with incredible guidance from teacher Claudio Franco, whose energetic and caring nature was evident from the moment the children sat down to write.
In conclusion, the event was a resounding success and is a part of a broader project aimed to encourage and develop reading and writing skills among the next generation to equip children with the skills they need to become informed, engaged, and responsible citizens who can navigate an ever-changing world with confidence and creativity. Other events will be held throughout the year, and the next event will take place in CDA at the end of May.
