Past the Finish Line

Updated: Apr 4, 2022

The Formula 1 season is coming to an end, as there are only six Grand Prixs left. It has been an exciting season with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton leading the championship run. Hamilton has been the FIA Formula 1 world champion for the past four years; in total he has been champion seven times. In the 2020 season, Hamilton won with a margin of over 100 points.

This year, the competition is a lot tighter. The current difference between first and second place holders is two points. Max Verstappen has made a great campaign with Red Bull and has been in a long tug of war for the championship with Hamilton. One thing that could have possibly made a big difference in Mercedes’ campaign is the banning of the F1 W11 dual axis steering, something Red Bull protested against ahead of the 2020 season, however, it was only banned in 2021.

Max Verstappen has had some stellar performances against the reigning champion. Verstappen has clocked in a total of eight pole positions, seven wins, and 11 podiums in a total of 15 races. As he is only two points away from first place, there is no way to predict who will become champion. The next six races will be extremely decisive of where this season will go.

McLaren has been extremely successful this season. They are placed third in the constructor’s cup placed behind Red Bull and Mercedes, respectively. Both their drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris have had overachieving performances. Ricciardo won his first race for McLaren and it is also his first win since he left Red Bull in 2018.

Kimi Räikkönen, a legendary driver, has retired this season. He began his career with Sauber, but he was most successful with Ferrari, when he won the championship in 2007. While having an underwhelming season with Alfa Romeo, it is irrefutable to say that his whole career has been the same. The world of Formula 1 will miss him.
