Pink, Blue and Yellow October

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

This collaboration between the Med Club and PP aims at emphasizing the importance of the Health Awareness Months. We need to take into account that these types of projects help to introduce a greater understanding of illnesses or issues that might affect the lives of many.

October, also known as Pink October, is the worldwide Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Down Syndrome Awareness Month. The National Breast Cancer Day always takes place on the third Friday of October - this year being the 22th - and it was first proclaimed by President Clinton in 1933. It is recognized by the pink ribbon, which is used to honor survivors, remember those who passed away due to this disease, and support research and raising funds that are helping in the process of defeating breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women; last year in Brazil, 66,280 new cases of women with breast cancer were recorded, resulting in an incidence of 43.7 per 100 000 women. Therefore, it is recommended to head to the doctor if: swelling in the breast or armpit, unusual discomfort or pain in the breast and persistent breast tenderness.

Furthermore, October is also Blue and Yellow, representing Down Syndrome Awareness Month - a condition in which every year, about 6.000 babies are born with. It impacts the physical development of the person, as well as causing potential challenges regarding thinking and learning.

Let's not forget to raise awareness towards these types of subjects and take into consideration the importance of supporting research and funds regarding the matter!
