Hey everyone! We are the medics club and this space in the Panther Press is to talk about the Health Awareness Months. This month of November represents Prostate Cancer Awareness and Alzheimer's month. It is important to always reinforce that these months don't only have the purpose of people caring about it only during its month, but actually to remember about specific issues a lot of people go through in their lives— so remember to be kind to everyone no matter the month.
Prostate Cancer Awareness month promotes the prevention of prostate cancer mostly common in men. Its goal is to reinforce the importance of early prevention and diagnosis of disease. Prostate cancer is the most frequent (representing 36.9% of all cancers) among men at the age of 18 years. Prostate cancer is a disease that initially has no symptoms, therefore annual preventive touch and blood tests are extremely important. According to INCA (Instituto Nacional de Câncer), a man dies every 38 minute due to prostate cancer in Brazil. It lasts the whole month, with blue being the color representing it.
The Alzheimer awareness month that happens every November, aims to share information to the public about the symptoms of this disease so that people can identify a loved one who may be developing it. It is important to show our support for the millions of people living with Alzheimer's and help in every way you can. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a form of dementia, which impacts memory, thinking, and behavior, seriously affecting a person’s ability to execute daily activities. Symptoms can appear after age 60, increasing with age, however younger people also have a chance of contracting the disease. In addition Alzheimer is the 5th leading cause of death among adults aged 65 years or older, being the most common form of dementia in 60-80% of all diagnosed cases.
Let’s do our best to raise awareness towards this topic, and take actions to maintain health.
