For the past few weeks, the conflict in Eastern Europe with Russia and Ukraine have put several countries on edge as to who they will stand with. The United States has made it clear that they plan to stand with Ukraine and stop the invasion that Russia started. However, it must first be understood why Russia invaded in the first place, how far into the country they’ve gotten, and the nation's goals with this crisis.
To keep it simple: on January 24th, Russian President Putin made a statement basically saying that he didn’t feel safe close to Ukraine because of the constant threat it posed. Furthermore, President Putin also said that his goal was to protect the people of Ukraine from going through bullying and genocide. Ultimately, Putin is trying to say that his actions are completely valid, that he doesn’t feel safe with Ukraine around and that wants to “save” them. However, because of Russia’s advances, millions of people were forced to flee from their homes for their own safety.
Ever since February 24th, when Putin made that statement, Russian troops have been moving into Ukraine. So far, Russia has military control of areas that have borders with the country, which can be seen in the picture below. However, Russia has plans to go deeper into Ukraine and eventually take control of its capital, Kyiv, which would be detrimental to the country, and only stop when Ukraine agrees to its terms.
