This August and September were recorded as one of the warmest in the state’s history. Supposedly, this huge heat wave is happening due to high atmospheric pressure bringing hot winds from the north and northeastern parts of the country down to the south and southeast of Brazil. As much as this heat brings opportunities for days by the shore, tanning by the pool, and physical activities outdoors, there are factors that should be considered while living in extreme heat conditions.

Nothing in excess is good, and that goes for both heat and cold. The overuse of air-conditioning can lead to extreme dryness near our body’s airway mucosa, obstructing its ability to prevent viruses and bacteria from entering. With that in mind, it is important to practice safe use of the air-conditioning by properly adjusting its temperature to vary from 21 to 23ºC, and never forgetting to keep it clean and bacteria-free!

Moreover, hydration and constant reapplication of the sunscreen become even more essential in these moments as people tend to forget and disregard them. John Hopkins Medicine States that “everybody needs some sun exposure to produce vitamin D,” which is essential for stronger and healthier bones, “but unprotected exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause damage to the skin, eyes, and immune system.” Throughout the day, most people will sweat and have contact with water, making it difficult for the sunscreen to remain on their skin, thus, making it not only crucial to apply sunscreen but to remember when to reapply and make this practice a part of one’s routine.

However, it is also a perfect opportunity to enjoy the amazing weather while also protecting and taking care of our precious collagen, healthy lungs, and physically active body!
