This past year’s soccer season will be marked by the “Copa Libertadores” final, which will take place on November 27th in the “Estádio Centenário” in Montevidéu, Uruguay. While it has been an incredibly difficult season to play with due to COVID-19 restrictions, both teams have performed incredibly well and overcame all obstacles to get to where they are.
Coming into the match-up we have Palmeiras, who defeated Universidad Católica, São Paulo, and Atlético Mineiro to get to the finals. Atlético Mineiro were heavy favorites to win it all and are currently favorites to win the Brasileirão. Palmeiras, being the defending champions, have to bring their absolute A-game to defeat the challenging match-up against Flamengo.
Flamengo is a team that has been doubted throughout the season, with four different coaches in the past two years. They had an incredibly successful tenure with Jorge Jesus, where they were able to win not only the 2019 Copa Libertadores, they won the same year’s Brasileirão. Flamengo had to defeat Defensa y Justicia, Olimpia, and Barcelona de Guayaquil to reach the finals. Flamengo is a team with nothing but pressure on their backs. Flamengo is looking to once again cement themselves in the history books.
"I believe Palmeiras has a more solid team because the coaches work started much earlier; even though I am an admirer of Renato's potential as a coach, he didn't have the time to implement his philosophy and had to be dealing with injuries, which created a big resistance from Flamengo's fans, since they are still waiting for a team that plays as well as the 2019 team did" says Mr. Bernado, US P.E. teacher.
