Have you heard people talking about Brexit? Do you know what it means? Brexit is the combination of the words "British" and "exit". Some say it is like a divorce referring to the idea of Great Britain leaving the European Union, EU. There are 28 countries in the European Union, and they have this agreement to have free trade and movement of people. On June 23, 2016, the people in the United Kingdom got to vote to decide if Brexit should happen or not. 52% of the voters were in favor of the UK leaving EU, according to BBC news.
"The issue of Brexit has divided the British population. It has forced us to really reflect, as a nation, on how we behave, especially on Social Media! Many of us have very different views on Brexit from our family members, friends and colleagues. It has forced us to really think about how we respectfully disagree with people with different political views" says Mrs. Natasha, former US Barra Counselor.
There are many negotiations going on. If the UK and the EU don't come up with a deal, Brexit will happen. The Parliament calendar shows Brexit deadline on October 31st, but some politicians have asked to postpone it, so there is more time to discuss the deals.
Some of the reasons for Brexit, according to forbes.com is that the EU didn't solve the economics problems as expected, and it allows too many immigrants.
"Over three years ago 52% of Brits voted to leave the EU, but now after three Prime Ministers, and six months past its original deadline, I read online that more Brits believe in ghosts than believe in Brexit. October 31 is the next deadline, but since it is Halloween, we are much more likely to see a ghost" says Mr. Sitch, US History teacher.
