Carnaval is an important part of the Brazilian culture, celebrated all over the country. As it could not be different at EARJ, the Portuguese Teachers organized a party, where the US students had the chance to learn how to dance the samba with our guest Dandara, a passista from Escola de Samba Vila Isabel.
The costumes were a show a part. From Carmen Miranda to Mario Bros, mermaids, hippies, pharao, you name it. There was even a horse.
The students also sang and performed their marchinhas, carnaval songs they created during Portuguese Lingua Patria classes, to be judged by all the US teachers. There were songs about school, racial and gender respect, and even natural hazards. Grade 9 “Sambando na Bad” was the winner for best costume, performance and lyrics. Their marchinha mentions their teachers in a very fun way, and how hard their student life is. Keep this in mind, teachers!
After the party, Mr Sitch’s grade 8 class volunteered to clean up the lounge. Their help was greatly appreciated by Maintenance staff.
Panther Press team thanks our Portuguese teachers for the super fun party! May others come.
