Name: Steve Spannring
Born: Livingston, Montana, USA
Favorite dish: Pork chile verde with fresh corn tortillas
Favorite place: Home. Or Bali. Bali is pretty amazing.
PP: What's something new you've learned recently?
SS: Humpback whales protect seals and other animals from killer whales. Sometimes they just get between predator and prey, but there is at least one recorded instance of a humpback rolling onto its back, lifting a seal onto its belly, and keeping it out of reach of the killer whales.
PP: What's your favorite day of the week?
SS: Every day is a great day!
PP: What was the most important moment from your journey as a professional in Education?
SS: Signing the contract that took me from Colorado to Cairo.
PP: Why did you choose to come to Brasil?
SS: International educators don’t always get to choose where we go. Our moves are dictated by where the jobs are, whether they are a fit for us and our families, and whether we fit a school's needs. My family and I were fortunate enough that all three of those came together to bring us to Rio!
PP: Why did you choose education?
SS: Honestly, I fell backwards into it. I was a history major who didn’t know what to do with a degree in history, so I decided to be a teacher. I ended up liking teaching a lot more than history!
PP: What has been your best accomplishment until now?
SS: I am happy with a lot that I have done in my life, but I don’t really rank my accomplishments. I just try to make every day better than the day before.
PP: What is in your opinion a school environment?
SS: A good school environment starts with everybody feeling safe, welcome, and included. Once that is established, learning can and should take on many forms.
